The East Greenbush community is mourning the loss of Derek Ouimette, a talented athlete and beloved former student of Columbia High School, who has tragically passed away.
Derek was a proud member of Columbia High’s Class of 2021, where he shone on the boys’ varsity basketball team as a dynamic point guard and shooting guard. Wearing jersey #2, Derek stood tall at 6’2” and brought not just skill but heart and determination to every game he played. He was known for his agility, sharp court vision, and unshakable commitment to his team.
He played his last recorded game on February 25, 2024, when Columbia faced Niskayuna in a close match that ended 59–63. While the scoreboard marked the end of the game, for those who watched Derek play, it was always more than just numbers. He brought passion, leadership, and a quiet strength that inspired teammates and coaches alike.
Off the court, Derek was known for his kind heart, humble attitude, and quiet confidence. He had the kind of presence that made others feel at ease, and a smile that never failed to brighten a room. Whether it was helping a teammate, encouraging a younger player, or simply being a good friend, Derek’s impact was felt far beyond the basketball court.
He leaves behind a heartbroken family, a close-knit circle of friends, and a community that will deeply miss his presence. Former classmates and teammates are remembering him as a respectful, talented, and loyal young man — someone who carried both his jersey and his character with pride.
As East Greenbush reflects on his life, many will remember Derek not only for the way he played the game, but for the way he lived: with quiet determination, unwavering sportsmanship, and genuine kindness.
